Conceptualization and 3D Modeling
The journey began with a vivid imagination, picturing the light socket as a quirky figure with two legs, reminiscent of a comical character sitting on a light bulb. The ceiling rose was envisioned as a delicate, cloud-shaped piece, adding a touch of ethereal beauty to the design.
To translate these ideas into tangible forms, we started by creating detailed 3D models. Using advanced 3D modeling software, we meticulously designed the body shape and legs of the light socket. The cloud shape of the ceiling rose was also rendered in 3D, ensuring every curve and contour matched our creative vision.
Simultaneously, a clay model of the cloud-shaped ceiling rose was prepared. Clay, being versatile and easy to mold, allowed for fine-tuning the design until it perfectly captured the desired softness and fluffiness of a cloud.
High-quality porcelain slip was then poured into the plaster molds. The slip was left to harden, forming the intricate shapes of the light socket and ceiling rose. After demolding, the raw porcelain pieces were allowed to dry completely.
The dried pieces were then fired in a kiln at high temperatures, a process known as bisque firing. This initial firing removed any remaining moisture and strengthened the porcelain. Following this, the pieces were smoothed to eliminate any imperfections and prepared for glazing.
Glazing was the final step before the light socket and ceiling rose became finished products. A carefully selected glaze was applied, enhancing the porcelain's durability and giving it a beautiful, glossy finish. The pieces were then fired once more, sealing the glaze and finalizing the production.
Here are some more process challenges and pictures: The cloud ceiling rose had to break 3 times before I made it survive.
The result of this intricate process is a delightful porcelain light socket and ceiling rose, combining whimsy and fun. The journey from concept to completion involved numerous prototypes, especially for the challenging cloud shape. Despite initial failures, perseverance led to a successful final product that brings a sense of humor and charm to any space. The playful design stands as a testament to the creative process and the art of porcelain craftsmanship.
